You can’t use up creativity; the more you use, the more you have.

Art Vision

At Nook Lane Junior School we strive to deliver high-quality art and design lessons that are fully inclusive to every child and that engage, inspire and challenge our pupils, ignigting their curiosity and creativity and fostering enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts.  Art and design promotes careful observation and an appreciation of the world around us and, by involving the children in a range of visual, tactile and sensory experiences we encourage them to communicate what they see, think and feel through the use of the elements and process of art and design. We aim to equip them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works that explore ideas and meanings and which will encourage a life-long passion for creativity that can be applied not just in art and design but across the curriculum and throughout many areas of everyday life. In their art studies, alongside design and the practical application of skills and knowledge, pupils will enhance their critical thinking through the evaluation and analysis of their own and others’ creative works.

Building knowledge sequentially

Through the study of great art, craft and design from a range of historical and cultural backgrounds, children will develop an understanding of the many disciplines within, art, craft and design and how they shape our history and futures whilst also fostering greater global awareness. We believe that learning through creativity builds life skills helping our pupils to be more inquisitive, persistent, imaginative and collaborative. Alongside this, we aim to develop an appreciation that art and design is a vital vehicle for personal expression, for everyone to use their voice and a way in which to explore identity and meet emotional and spiritual needs.

We also value the close links that art and design provides to parents, carers, families and the local and wider community and aim to support this through regular opportunities to share our art and design curriculum with all school stakeholders.

Art overview of learning

Art units have been mapped out across the year to ensure children cover the appropriate curriculum. Within our unit plans, art knowledge and skills are mapped-out progressively within each year group ensuring that children make progress in their skillset year-on-year.
